Arbeloa Wants Bassey to Become Fulham Leader Ahead of New Premier League Season

Fulham head coach Álvaro Arbeloa has backed Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey to take on a leadership role at the club as the London side prepares for the new Premier League season.

Arbeloa’s growing confidence in the Nigeria international was highlighted during pre-season, with Bassey wearing the captain’s armband in Fulham’s final two friendly matches against Málaga and Stuttgart.

The Spanish coach believes Bassey’s defensive qualities, physical ability and strong work ethic make him particularly suited to the style of football he wants Fulham to play.

Arbeloa also believes the 26-year-old’s personality can help him become an influential figure within the dressing room.

“I see Calvin as a proper player, a top player for the style of play I want at Fulham,” Arbeloa said during his post-match press conference following the Stuttgart game.

“To defend so high with a lot of space in behind, he has everything, and I think he’s a top player.

“He’s a funny guy, but when we have to work, he’s the first one. I really love him, and I want him to be our leader.”

Bassey’s potential elevation into a leadership position reflects his steady development since returning to English football following spells with Rangers in Scotland and Ajax in the Netherlands.

The defender joined Fulham from Ajax in 2023 and has since established himself as one of the club’s most dependable defenders.

Last season, Bassey made 30 Premier League appearances, starting 28 of those matches as he continued to cement his place in the Fulham defence.

His influence was even more evident during the 2024/25 campaign, when he was voted Fulham’s Player of the Season after making 35 Premier League appearances.

Arbeloa, who took charge of Fulham ahead of the new campaign, has spent the pre-season assessing his squad and identifying the players capable of carrying greater responsibility.

Bassey appears to be one of the Spaniard’s preferred figures, with his role potentially extending beyond simply being a regular starter.

The Nigerian is being considered alongside Sander Berge, Antonee Robinson and goalkeeper Bernd Leno as part of an experienced group expected to provide leadership and guidance to Fulham’s younger players.

With the new Premier League season approaching, Bassey will now have the opportunity to build on his impressive performances and demonstrate that he can become not only a key defender but also one of the leading voices within the Fulham squad.
