The Nigeria Customs Service, Seme Area Command, has intercepted contraband goods with a combined value of about N365 million, including 3,300 explosive cartridges, in a renewed crackdown on smuggling activities along the Nigeria Benin border.

The seizures were made during a series of anti smuggling operations carried out by officers of the command as part of efforts to prevent prohibited goods from entering or leaving the country through the land border.

The interception of the explosive cartridges is particularly significant given the security implications associated with the unauthorised movement of explosive materials across Nigeria’s borders.

Customs authorities are expected to subject the seized items to further examination while relevant security agencies may be involved in investigations to determine their source, intended destination and the individuals or networks behind the attempted movement.

The command also intercepted other prohibited and undeclared goods during the operations, with the total estimated duty paid value of the seizures put at about N365 million.

The latest operation underscores the continued challenges faced by border enforcement agencies in curbing smuggling along the Seme corridor, one of Nigeria’s major gateways for movement of people and goods between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin.

Customs officials have intensified intelligence led patrols and surveillance along the border in response to attempts by smugglers to exploit the busy international route.

The Seme Command has repeatedly warned individuals and businesses involved in smuggling to desist from activities capable of undermining national security and economic interests.

The interception of explosive materials is also expected to attract closer scrutiny because of the potential risks associated with their diversion into criminal networks.

Beyond the security implications, Customs seizures of contraband are aimed at protecting legitimate businesses from unfair competition created by illegal imports and ensuring compliance with Nigeria’s import and export regulations.

The agency has continued to rely on intelligence gathering, inter agency cooperation and physical inspections to identify suspicious consignments and prevent prohibited goods from crossing the country’s borders.

Investigations into the latest seizures are expected to continue, with suspects, where identified, potentially facing prosecution under relevant customs and criminal laws.

The command has also urged members of the public to provide useful information about smuggling activities and suspicious movements along border communities.

The latest seizure demonstrates the importance of sustained surveillance and coordination among security and border management agencies, particularly along routes that connect Nigeria with neighbouring countries.

Authorities are expected to provide further details on the seized explosive cartridges and other contraband as investigations progress.
