A man in his 20s has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following a stabbing at a hotel housing asylum seekers near Heathrow Airport in England.

Armed police were called to the Stanwell Hotel, south of Heathrow, at about 6:30pm on Saturday after receiving reports of a stabbing. Officers attended the scene and arrested the suspect. Police said they are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

The victim, a man in his 30s, was taken to hospital with serious injuries. His identity has not been released by authorities.

Surrey Police said armed officers were deployed because of the nature of the incident and assisted with the arrest. A police presence remained in the area as detectives began their initial investigation.

Detective Superintendent Kate Hyder said the incident had caused concern within the local community and appealed to residents to speak with officers if they had relevant information.

Police have also urged members of the public not to speculate about the circumstances surrounding the stabbing on social media while investigations are ongoing.

The Stanwell Hotel is among facilities being used to accommodate asylum seekers as the UK continues to deal with pressure on its asylum accommodation system.

The incident comes amid intense public and political debate in Britain over the use of hotels to house asylum seekers, with several such facilities having become the focus of protests and demonstrations in recent months.

However, police have not indicated that the stabbing was connected to wider protests or political activity. Investigators are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and the relationship, if any, between the suspect and victim.

The arrested man remains in police custody as enquiries continue. Being arrested on suspicion of attempted murder does not mean the suspect has been charged or found guilty of an offence.

Authorities are expected to provide further information as the investigation progresses.

Police have appealed to anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist detectives with their enquiries.

The investigation remains ongoing, while residents and staff at the hotel have been urged to cooperate with officers and avoid spreading unverified information about the case.
