Nigeria’s Flying Eagles suffered a painful 4-1 defeat to Burkina Faso in the final of the 2026 WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship at the Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast, on Sunday.
The heavy defeat ended Nigeria’s hopes of retaining the regional title and, more significantly, ruled the seven-time African champions out of the 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations and the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Azerbaijan.
Burkina Faso completed a tournament double over Nigeria after previously defeating the Flying Eagles 2-0 in the group stage. The Young Stallions secured the regional crown in emphatic fashion and will join hosts Ghana as WAFU Zone B’s representatives at next year’s U-20 AFCON.
Nigeria’s hopes of revenge quickly faded as Burkina Faso produced a devastating start, scoring three times within the opening 15 minutes to take firm control of the contest.
The Flying Eagles struggled to recover from the early setback, with Burkina Faso maintaining their composure and protecting their commanding advantage.
Nigeria managed to reduce the deficit from the penalty spot in the second half, briefly raising hopes of a comeback. However, the Young Stallions remained in control and added a fourth goal late in the game to complete a convincing victory.
The result brought an abrupt end to Nigeria’s campaign and their hopes of defending the regional crown they won in Lomé in October 2024.
Burkina Faso’s recent dominance over Nigeria has also continued to grow. The Young Stallions defeated the Flying Eagles 1-0 in their 2024 WAFU Zone B meeting in Lomé, while the two sides played out a 2-2 draw when they met in Niger Republic in 2022.
Nigeria had entered the final with two major objectives: retain their WAFU Zone B title and secure one of the region’s two qualification places for the 2027 U-20 AFCON.
Instead, the defeat leaves the Flying Eagles facing a major setback, with the team now set to miss both the continental U-20 tournament and the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
For Burkina Faso, however, the victory represents another significant milestone for their youth football programme and confirms the Young Stallions as one of the leading forces in West African youth football.
