Proper nutrition has been identified as one of the most important factors in the recovery of individuals living with hepatitis, with health experts emphasizing that a balanced diet can significantly improve treatment outcomes and support the liver’s healing process.

Medical professionals explained that hepatitis, an inflammation of the liver caused by viral infections, alcohol abuse, certain medications or autoimmune disorders, affects the body’s ability to process and store nutrients. As a result, patients often require tailored nutritional support to restore lost strength, improve immunity and promote liver regeneration.

Experts noted that consuming a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats helps provide essential nutrients needed for tissue repair and overall wellbeing. They also advised patients to maintain adequate hydration, limit foods high in saturated fats, sugar and salt, and completely avoid alcohol, which can further damage the liver and delay recovery.

Nutritionists warned that malnutrition remains a common challenge among people suffering from chronic liver diseases. Poor nutritional status, they said, can weaken the immune system, prolong hospital stays and increase the risk of complications. They therefore called for routine nutritional assessments and dietary counselling to become an integral part of hepatitis management in healthcare facilities.

Health professionals also urged patients to avoid self-medication and the indiscriminate use of herbal supplements without medical supervision, noting that some products may contain substances that are harmful to the liver or interfere with prescribed medications.

In addition to proper nutrition, experts highlighted the importance of hepatitis prevention through vaccination, regular screening, good hygiene practices and early diagnosis. They stressed that combining healthy eating with appropriate medical treatment gives patients the best chance of recovery while reducing the long-term burden of liver disease.

They maintained that nutrition should not be viewed as an optional aspect of care but as a critical component of hepatitis treatment, capable of improving quality of life and enhancing recovery for affected individuals.
