Catholic Bishops Gave Voice to Nigerians’ Concerns, Says Archbishop Onuoha

The Archbishop of Owerri Ecclesiastical Province, Most Rev. Lucius Ugorji Onuoha, has defended the position of Catholic bishops on national issues, saying their interventions reflect the concerns and struggles of ordinary Nigerians.

Archbishop Onuoha stated that the Catholic Church’s leadership has consistently spoken on issues affecting citizens, including economic hardship, insecurity, governance challenges and the need for improved welfare. He noted that the bishops’ comments were motivated by concern for the wellbeing of the people rather than political interests.

According to him, the role of the Church extends beyond spiritual guidance to include advocating for justice, peace and the common good. He explained that religious leaders have a responsibility to draw attention to challenges facing society and encourage authorities to take actions that improve the lives of citizens.

The Archbishop stressed that the concerns raised by the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria were based on realities experienced by Nigerians across different communities. He urged government authorities to view such interventions as constructive contributions aimed at strengthening national development.

The comments come amid continued public debate over the role of religious institutions in national affairs, with some Nigerians supporting faith based advocacy while others argue that political matters should be left to elected officials.

Church leaders have in recent years expressed concerns over economic pressures, insecurity and social challenges, calling for policies that promote inclusion, accountability and sustainable development.

Archbishop Onuoha maintained that speaking on behalf of vulnerable citizens remains part of the Church’s mission, adding that the goal is to encourage leaders at all levels to prioritise the needs of the people.
