The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) is stepping up efforts to eliminate ticket racketeering and other fraudulent practices along the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor as part of measures to improve transparency, restore passenger confidence and ensure fair access to train services. The move follows persistent complaints from commuters who have alleged that unauthorized ticket agents and touts exploit high passenger demand by reselling tickets at inflated prices.

The Abuja–Kaduna rail service remains one of Nigeria’s busiest passenger routes, serving thousands of travelers daily due to security concerns on the highway and the growing preference for rail transportation. The increasing demand for tickets has, however, created opportunities for illegal operators who purchase tickets in bulk or collude with others to resell them at prices far above the official rates.

Rail authorities have continued to strengthen ticketing procedures by promoting digital ticket purchases, identity verification and stricter monitoring of sales channels. Officials believe these measures will reduce opportunities for manipulation while ensuring that genuine passengers have equal access to available seats. Additional surveillance and internal monitoring mechanisms are also being deployed to identify and sanction anyone found engaging in sharp practices within the ticketing process.

Commuters have welcomed the renewed efforts, noting that ticket racketeering has for years made it difficult for travelers to obtain tickets through legitimate channels. Many passengers have complained of arriving at railway stations only to discover that tickets had been declared sold out, forcing them to patronize unauthorized agents who demand significantly higher prices.

Industry stakeholders say eliminating ticket racketeering is essential to improving the efficiency and credibility of Nigeria’s rail transport system. They argue that transparent ticket sales not only protect passengers from exploitation but also improve revenue accountability and strengthen public confidence in railway operations.

The renewed enforcement campaign also comes as authorities continue to enhance security and operational efficiency along the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor. Recent investments in passenger safety, infrastructure maintenance and operational monitoring are expected to improve service delivery and encourage greater use of rail transport as a safe and reliable alternative to road travel.

Transportation experts have urged passengers to purchase tickets only through authorized channels and to report suspected cases of extortion or illegal ticket sales to railway authorities. They believe greater public cooperation will complement ongoing reforms and make it more difficult for racketeers to operate.

The Federal Government has repeatedly emphasized its commitment to modernizing Nigeria’s railway sector through improved infrastructure, digital services and stronger regulatory oversight. As passenger traffic continues to grow, authorities say maintaining integrity in ticket sales will remain a key priority in delivering efficient and customer-focused rail services.

With the latest crackdown, expectations are high that passengers will experience a more transparent ticketing process, reduced exploitation and improved access to train services. Stakeholders believe sustained enforcement, combined with technology-driven ticket management systems, will help eliminate racketeering and strengthen confidence in one of Nigeria’s most important rail corridors.
