President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that Nigeria is taking the lead in developing the skilled workforce needed to drive Africa’s renewable energy transition, describing human capital development as a critical pillar for achieving sustainable industrial growth and energy security across the continent.
The President said the Federal Government is expanding investments in technical education, vocational training and digital skills to equip young Nigerians with the expertise required to support emerging industries in renewable energy, clean technology and green manufacturing.
According to Tinubu, Nigeria’s commitment to building a globally competitive workforce is aimed at positioning the country as a regional hub for renewable energy innovation while creating employment opportunities for millions of young people.
He noted that the global shift toward cleaner energy presents enormous economic opportunities for African countries, stressing that developing the right skills would enable Nigeria to attract greater investment, expand local manufacturing and strengthen its participation in the global green economy.
The President highlighted ongoing government initiatives to improve access to technical and vocational education, promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics education and encourage stronger collaboration between industry and academic institutions.
He said the administration is also working with development partners, private sector organisations and international institutions to establish training programmes that will prepare Nigerian professionals for careers in solar energy, wind power, battery technology, electric mobility and other clean energy sectors.
Industry stakeholders welcomed the government’s focus on skills development, noting that the growing renewable energy market will require technicians, engineers, project managers and other specialised professionals to meet increasing demand across Africa.
Experts also stressed that investment in human capital would enhance Nigeria’s competitiveness, reduce dependence on imported technical expertise and accelerate the country’s transition to cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.
They added that strengthening local capacity would support the implementation of renewable energy projects, improve energy access in underserved communities and contribute to economic diversification by creating new industries and employment opportunities.
The President expressed confidence that with sustained investment in education, innovation and workforce development, Nigeria will continue to play a leading role in Africa’s renewable energy transformation while supporting inclusive economic growth and long term environmental sustainability.
