Nigerian banks have reassured customers that their digital banking platforms and financial systems remain secure despite a recent surge in cyberattacks targeting financial institutions and critical infrastructure across the world.

The assurances come as cybersecurity experts warn that hackers are deploying increasingly sophisticated methods, including ransomware, phishing campaigns and artificial intelligence driven attacks, to exploit vulnerabilities in banking networks and online financial services.

Several commercial banks said they have strengthened their cybersecurity frameworks through continuous investment in advanced security technologies, real time threat monitoring and multi layered defence systems designed to detect and neutralise potential attacks before they compromise customer data or financial assets.

Industry stakeholders noted that Nigerian banks operate under strict cybersecurity and risk management guidelines issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria, requiring financial institutions to maintain robust information security systems and regularly assess emerging cyber threats.

Bank executives said customers’ deposits and personal information remain protected through encryption technologies, fraud detection systems, secure authentication processes and continuous monitoring of digital transactions.

The banks also urged customers to play an active role in safeguarding their accounts by protecting their passwords, avoiding suspicious links, enabling two factor authentication where available and reporting unusual account activity immediately.

Cybersecurity analysts observed that the growing adoption of digital banking, mobile payments and online financial services has increased the need for stronger collaboration between banks, regulators and technology providers to combat evolving cyber threats.

They stressed that continuous staff training, customer awareness campaigns and investment in artificial intelligence powered security tools are becoming increasingly important in protecting the financial sector from sophisticated cybercriminals.

The Nigeria Inter Bank Settlement System (NIBSS), financial institutions and relevant regulatory agencies are also working together to strengthen the country’s digital payment ecosystem by improving fraud detection capabilities and enhancing information sharing on emerging cyber risks.

Experts believe Nigeria’s banking sector has made significant progress in strengthening cyber resilience, but emphasise that sustained investment in cybersecurity infrastructure and customer education will remain essential as cyber threats continue to evolve globally.
