A police officer and two other persons have been killed in a deadly attack by suspected Lakurawa gunmen in Sokoto State, in the latest incident highlighting the growing security challenges in parts of northwestern Nigeria.
According to security sources, the attackers ambushed residents and security personnel in a community within the state, opening fire and causing panic among locals. The assault claimed the lives of a police officer and two civilians, while several others sustained injuries and property was damaged during the attack.
The Sokoto State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that security operatives had been deployed to the affected area to restore calm and prevent further attacks. Authorities also disclosed that investigations were underway to identify and apprehend those responsible for the violence.
In response to the attack, security agencies intensified patrols and surveillance across vulnerable communities, assuring residents that every effort was being made to track down the perpetrators and strengthen security in the area.
Community leaders called on the Federal Government and security agencies to sustain military operations against armed groups operating in the region. They also appealed for improved intelligence gathering, greater security presence, and closer collaboration between residents and law enforcement agencies to curb recurring attacks.
The latest incident has renewed concerns over the activities of armed groups in parts of Sokoto State, with residents urging authorities to take decisive measures to safeguard lives and property and restore lasting peace to affected communities.
