Global oil prices fell by nearly five percent after the United States announced plans to resume talks with Iran, raising hopes of easing tensions in the Middle East and reducing concerns over disruptions to global crude oil supplies.

Brent crude, the international oil benchmark, dropped by more than five percent during early trading, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) also recorded sharp losses as investors reacted positively to prospects of renewed diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran.

The market responded after US President Donald Trump disclosed that fresh negotiations with Iran would begin in a bid to resolve the prolonged conflict that has unsettled global energy markets for months. The announcement eased fears of further military escalation that could threaten oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes.

Energy analysts said the decline in crude prices reflected growing optimism that diplomatic efforts could help stabilize oil supplies and reduce the geopolitical risk premium that has kept prices elevated since the conflict intensified.

The possibility of improved relations between the two countries has increased expectations that restrictions affecting oil production and exports could gradually ease, potentially boosting global supply and helping to moderate fuel prices.

Lower crude oil prices could provide relief for oil importing nations facing inflationary pressures from high energy costs. For businesses and consumers, cheaper oil may translate into reduced transportation and production expenses while easing pressure on global supply chains.

Despite the sharp decline, analysts cautioned that oil markets remain highly sensitive to developments in the Middle East. They noted that any setback in the negotiations or renewed military activity could quickly reverse the downward trend and push prices higher again.

Investors are expected to closely monitor the outcome of the planned talks, as well as developments surrounding the security of shipping routes in the Gulf, which remain critical to global energy supplies.

The latest price movement highlights how geopolitical developments continue to influence commodity markets, with diplomacy playing an increasingly important role in shaping investor sentiment and global energy prices.
