The All Progressives Congress (APC) has further consolidated its political dominance in Jigawa State following the defection of the lone Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member in the State House of Assembly.
Muhammad Kabir, who represents Birnin Kudu Constituency, officially dumped the PDP for the APC during a ceremony held at the Government House in Dutse. The lawmaker was received by top party leaders alongside hundreds of his supporters.
Kabir’s defection marks a significant political milestone, leaving the 30-member Jigawa State House of Assembly entirely under the control of the APC and effectively ending opposition representation in the legislature.
Speaking at the event, APC leaders welcomed the lawmaker into the ruling party, describing his decision as a reflection of growing confidence in the party’s leadership and developmental agenda in the state.
Political analysts say the move further strengthens the APC’s position in Jigawa as political parties begin to position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections. The development is also expected to reshape the state’s political landscape, with attention now turning to how opposition parties will respond in the coming months.
Kabir, a longtime political associate of former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, has yet to publicly outline the specific reasons behind his decision to leave the PDP.
The latest defection underscores the continuing wave of political realignments across Nigeria as parties intensify preparations for future electoral contests.
