Super Eagles defender Zaidu Sanusi has added another trophy to his growing collection after helping FC Porto defeat Torreense 1-0 to win the 2026 Portuguese Super Cup at the Estádio Cidade de Coimbra.
The victory handed Porto a record-extending 25th Portuguese Super Cup and the club’s 88th major trophy, moving the Dragons one title ahead of rivals Benfica as the most decorated club in Portuguese football. It also marked the perfect start to the 2026/27 season for the reigning Portuguese champions.
The game’s only goal came in the 38th minute when Danish midfielder Victor Froholdt rose to meet a pinpoint cross from winger Pepe, heading home what proved to be the decisive strike.
Sanusi delivered a disciplined and assured performance at left-back, playing the full 90 minutes as Porto kept their opponents at bay. The Nigerian international completed 84 per cent of his passes, registered 50 touches, won 50 per cent of his ground duels, and finished the match with a 100 per cent tackle success rate, underlining his defensive reliability.
The Super Cup triumph is the 10th major trophy of Sanusi’s career with Porto and his fourth Portuguese Super Cup title. His trophy collection also includes Primeira Liga, Taça de Portugal, and Taça da Liga honours, highlighting his role in one of the club’s most successful recent eras.
With 10 senior club trophies, Sanusi now ranks among Nigeria’s most decorated footballers in club football, behind only Nwankwo Kanu (14 trophies) and John Obi Mikel (12 trophies).
As Porto begin the new campaign with silverware already secured, Sanusi will be aiming to help the Dragons defend their domestic titles and challenge strongly in European competition, while continuing to strengthen his legacy as one of Nigeria’s most successful exports to European football.
