CNN| U.S. Representative Kevin Mullin, a Democrat from California, has criticised the United States’ involvement in the conflict with Iran, arguing that the war lacks a clear strategic objective and warning that it could leave the country in a weaker position.
Speaking to CNN, Mullin said the United States had already committed an estimated $37 billion to the conflict.
“This is a war in search of a rationale,” Mullin said, expressing concern that the United States could lose lives and financial resources without bringing lasting peace to the Middle East.
The congressman also argued that domestic economic pressures were increasing as the conflict continued, citing rising fuel and household costs and saying public opposition to the war was growing.
Mullin said ending the conflict should be the administration’s immediate priority, but warned that Washington risked emerging with a weaker diplomatic outcome than before the war began.
He expressed concern that the United States could fail to secure a meaningful agreement with Iran while the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, prolonging uncertainty in global energy markets.
Mullin also suggested that President Donald Trump could ultimately negotiate an agreement that is less comprehensive than the nuclear accord reached under former President Barack Obama, which Trump withdrew the United States from during his first term.
The White House has maintained that its military operations are intended to protect U.S. forces and interests, while pressing Iran to return to negotiations over its nuclear programme and regional activities.
The conflict has intensified in recent weeks, with continued military exchanges raising concerns about regional stability and the impact on global oil supplies.
