Abuja — The Federal Government has announced plans to commence the digital registration and tagging of livestock nationwide as part of efforts to curb cattle rustling, strengthen security, and modernise Nigeria’s livestock sector.
The initiative is expected to establish a comprehensive database that will enable authorities to identify and trace livestock, making it more difficult for stolen animals to be traded or transported across the country. Officials say the programme will also improve disease surveillance, support livestock management, and enhance the overall efficiency of the livestock value chain.
According to the government, the digital identification system forms part of broader reforms aimed at addressing long-standing challenges in the livestock sector, including insecurity, illegal livestock movements, and poor record-keeping. The authorities noted that the initiative would promote accountability while supporting efforts to improve productivity and attract investment into the industry.
The government said it would work closely with state governments, livestock owners, pastoralist associations, and other stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the programme across the country.
Stakeholders have welcomed the proposed initiative, describing it as a significant step towards tackling cattle rustling, reducing farmer-herder conflicts, and strengthening confidence in Nigeria’s livestock industry. They, however, stressed the need for effective implementation, adequate public awareness, and sustained collaboration with livestock owners to achieve the programme’s objectives.
The digital registration and tagging scheme is expected to play a key role in enhancing livestock traceability, improving security, and supporting the Federal Government’s broader agenda for agricultural transformation and rural economic development.
