ADDIS ABABA , Ethiopia is set to receive $2 million in financing from the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA) to support the development of a pioneering energy-agriculture mini-grid project aimed at expanding clean energy access while boosting agricultural productivity. The financing is expected to support the design, preparation and implementation of an innovative project that integrates renewable energy with agricultural production, providing reliable electricity to farming communities and agro-processing enterprises.
The initiative is designed to demonstrate how decentralized renewable energy systems can improve agricultural value chains by powering irrigation, cold storage facilities, food processing centres and other productive uses in rural areas. According to project proponents, the energy-agriculture mini-grid model seeks to address two major development challenges simultaneously—limited access to electricity and low agricultural productivity—thereby creating new economic opportunities for rural communities.
The project is expected to improve access to affordable and reliable electricity for farmers while enabling greater use of modern agricultural technologies that can increase yields, reduce post-harvest losses and improve food security. Officials said the financing from SEFA would help advance project preparation, technical studies and investment planning required to attract additional public and private sector financing for implementation.
The initiative also aligns with Ethiopia’s broader efforts to expand renewable energy generation, strengthen climate resilience and promote sustainable rural development through innovative infrastructure investments.
Experts believe integrating renewable energy with agriculture has the potential to transform rural economies by lowering production costs, increasing productivity and supporting the growth of agro-processing industries. The project is also expected to contribute to job creation, particularly for young people and women, by stimulating business opportunities in farming, food processing, equipment maintenance and energy services.
Stakeholders noted that reliable electricity remains one of the major constraints limiting agricultural value addition across many parts of Africa, where farmers often lack access to modern processing and storage facilities. By providing clean and dependable energy, the mini-grid project is expected to improve market access, reduce food waste and increase the competitiveness of agricultural products.
The initiative further supports regional and continental efforts to promote sustainable energy solutions that contribute to economic growth while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on fossil fuels.
Development partners said the project could serve as a model for similar energy-agriculture investments across Africa, demonstrating how renewable energy can accelerate agricultural transformation and rural industrialisation. Once implemented, the project is expected to strengthen Ethiopia’s renewable energy sector, enhance food systems and improve the livelihoods of thousands of rural households through increased productivity, higher incomes and expanded access to modern energy services.
