Nigeria has received a major boost in its digital ambitions following recognition by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as one of Africa’s leading artificial intelligence (AI) economies.

Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, described the acknowledgment as a strong validation of the country’s deliberate efforts to build a competitive and future-ready digital ecosystem.

Speaking in a statement released on Monday, Tijani said the IMF’s recognition reflects Nigeria’s steady progress in positioning itself to fully harness the opportunities presented by the global AI revolution.

He noted that the country’s performance in key global benchmarks, including the Global Index on Responsible AI (GIRAI) and the Oxford Government AI Readiness Index, played a significant role in earning the recognition.

Despite the milestone, the IMF highlighted the need for sustained investment in critical areas such as electricity, broadband infrastructure and digital skills development to unlock the full potential of AI across Nigeria.

Tijani explained that over the past two years, the Federal Government has been laying a solid foundation for AI growth through strategic initiatives. These include the National AI Strategy, National AI Trust, AI Collective, Nigeria AI Scaling Hub, the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme, and Project BRIDGE aimed at expanding fibre-optic connectivity nationwide.

According to the minister, these initiatives are designed not only to prepare Nigeria for AI adoption but also to ensure the country can develop, deploy and scale homegrown AI solutions that address local challenges and create economic opportunities.

He added that the government remains focused on deepening collaboration with the private sector, academia, development partners and innovators to remove barriers to AI adoption, strengthen infrastructure and build globally competitive talent.
