Trump Administration Cites New Jersey Voting Error in Push for Noncitizen Voter Data

The Trump administration has cited a voting error in New Jersey as it renewed calls for states to provide data on noncitizens, arguing that greater access to voter information is needed to protect the integrity of U.S. elections.

Federal officials pointed to the New Jersey case as evidence that stronger safeguards and improved data sharing are necessary to prevent ineligible individuals from being registered to vote. The administration has asked states to cooperate in providing records that could help identify noncitizens on voter rolls.

The New Jersey incident involved an administrative error that election officials said was identified and corrected. State authorities maintained that existing safeguards worked as intended and emphasised that there was no evidence the mistake affected election outcomes.

The administration’s request has drawn criticism from voting rights advocates and some state officials, who argue that broad demands for personal data could discourage eligible voters from participating in elections and raise privacy concerns. Supporters of the initiative, however, say accurate voter rolls are essential to maintaining public confidence in the electoral system.

The debate over voter eligibility and election administration has remained a contentious issue in U.S. politics, with federal and state governments continuing to disagree over how best to balance election security with voter access.

The Justice Department and election officials are expected to continue discussions with states over voter registration data as legal and political disputes surrounding election administration persist.
