The Pentagon said on Tuesday that the United States has spent approximately $37.5 billion on military operations related to the war with Iran, underscoring the growing financial burden of the conflict as fighting enters its second week.
U.S. defence officials said the figure includes the cost of air operations, missile strikes, naval deployments, troop movements, logistics, intelligence support and replenishment of munitions used during the campaign.
Pentagon officials said the expenditures reflect the scale of the U.S. military response since hostilities began, with American forces conducting sustained operations against Iranian military targets while reinforcing bases and naval assets across the Middle East. The department noted that the overall cost is expected to rise if operations continue.
The conflict has prompted the United States to deploy additional aircraft, warships and missile defence systems to the region, while increasing support for the protection of commercial shipping routes in the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz and surrounding waters.
The financial update comes as members of Congress continue to debate the long-term economic impact of the conflict, with some lawmakers calling for greater transparency over military spending and others arguing that continued operations are necessary to protect U.S. personnel and regional allies.
Military analysts said prolonged hostilities could place additional pressure on the U.S. defence budget, particularly if the conflict expands or requires a sustained American presence in the region. They also warned that disruptions to global energy markets and commercial shipping could add to the broader economic costs of the war.
The Pentagon said it would continue providing periodic updates on operational expenditures while maintaining that U.S. forces remain prepared to respond to further threats from Iran or its regional allies.
