Amazon has cut jobs in its Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) division as the company continues to reorganise its artificial intelligence operations while expanding investment in priority AI projects.

The layoffs affected a portion of employees working within Amazon’s AGI group, which is responsible for developing advanced AI technologies. The company did not disclose the number of positions eliminated but said the changes were part of a broader effort to streamline operations and better align resources with long-term strategic priorities.

Amazon said it remains committed to investing heavily in artificial intelligence, including the development of foundation models, generative AI services and AI infrastructure. The company added that it continues to hire for key AI roles even as it reduces staffing in selected teams.

The move comes as major technology companies continue reshaping their AI businesses to focus spending on high-priority research and commercial products. Firms across the industry have announced targeted workforce reductions while increasing investment in data centres, specialised AI chips and cloud-based AI services.

Industry analysts said the restructuring reflects the intense competition in the AI sector, where companies are seeking to balance rapid innovation with cost discipline. Amazon has invested billions of dollars in AI development and strategic partnerships as it competes with rivals in the race to build increasingly capable AI systems.

The company said affected employees would receive severance packages and support in finding new opportunities within Amazon where possible.
