Argentina captain Lionel Messi has spoken publicly for the first time since his side’s heartbreaking defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, admitting the loss will take time to overcome while congratulating the new world champions on their triumph.
The Inter Miami forward, who remained silent in the immediate aftermath of Sunday’s final in New York, shared an emotional message on his Instagram account on Monday following Argentina’s 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain.
Reflecting on the painful result, Messi described the defeat as one of the toughest moments of his illustrious career but insisted he would remember the team’s remarkable journey to a second consecutive FIFA World Cup final.
“The pain is so great, and it’s going to be hard for me to close this wound. But I’ll keep all the good stuff too… With the matches we turned leaving everything and that will remain forever in the memory, with the support of an entire country that together with the work and effort of this group led us to be, once again, among the best in the world,” Messi wrote.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner praised the commitment of his teammates, noting that reaching back-to-back World Cup finals was an achievement worthy of recognition despite their inability to retain the title won in Qatar four years earlier.
“Today it’s hard to evaluate what we did, but this group reached two consecutive World Cup finals,” he added.
Messi also expressed gratitude to Argentine supporters for standing behind the national team throughout the tournament, describing their unwavering support as a source of motivation from the opening match to the final.
“Thank you very much from the heart for every greeting and for every message. Once again we managed to unite as a country and be all together, sharing the immense pride of being Argentinian.”
In a gesture widely praised by football fans around the world, the 39-year-old concluded his message by congratulating Spain on their World Cup success.
“I also want to congratulate Spain on the championship,” Messi said.
Argentina entered the tournament as defending champions after lifting the World Cup in Qatar in 2022. Although Lionel Scaloni’s side fell short in their bid to retain the trophy, they became the first men’s national team since Brazil in 1998 to reach consecutive FIFA World Cup finals.
Messi was once again among the standout performers at the tournament, finishing with eight goals and four assists to rank second in the race for the Golden Boot behind France’s Kylian Mbappé. His performances reinforced his enduring influence on the international stage despite Argentina’s final defeat.
Spain’s victory secured the nation’s second FIFA World Cup title and capped a memorable tournament in which La Roja also became the first country to simultaneously hold both the FIFA Men’s and Women’s World Cup trophies. Midfielder Rodri was named the tournament’s Golden Ball winner, while teenage sensation Lamine Yamal continued his remarkable rise with another influential display.
Although the defeat ended Argentina’s hopes of defending their crown, Messi’s heartfelt message reflected both the disappointment of falling short and the sportsmanship that has defined much of his international career.
