Diplomatic Push Intensifies to Preserve US Partnership With UN Refugee Agency

International diplomats are stepping up efforts to prevent a breakdown in relations between the United States and the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) amid concerns that the administration of President Donald Trump could significantly reduce or end its cooperation with the organisation.

According to Reuters, Senior diplomats and United Nations officials have been engaged in behind the scenes discussions aimed at preserving Washington’s relationship with the UNHCR, one of the world’s largest humanitarian agencies. The talks come as the Trump administration reviews U.S. funding for several international organisations as part of a broader reassessment of foreign assistance.

The United States has historically been the UNHCR’s largest donor, contributing billions of dollars annually to support refugees, asylum seekers and displaced people across the world. Humanitarian officials warned that any reduction in U.S. support could affect emergency operations in regions facing conflict and humanitarian crises, including Sudan, Ukraine, Afghanistan and parts of the Middle East.

Diplomats familiar with the discussions said efforts are focused on convincing U.S. officials that continued engagement with the refugee agency aligns with American national security and humanitarian interests.
