Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has described Spain’s victory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as the “perfect birthday gift,” congratulating La Roja on their historic triumph while expressing admiration for the team’s outstanding performances throughout the tournament.
Obi, whose birthday coincided with the World Cup final, shared his reaction after Spain defeated Argentina to lift the prestigious trophy, praising the newly crowned champions for their discipline, teamwork and commitment to excellence on football’s biggest stage.
According to Obi, Spain’s success was richly deserved after a campaign marked by consistency, tactical brilliance and the emergence of several exciting young talents who played pivotal roles in the country’s title-winning run.
“Spain’s World Cup victory is a perfect birthday gift,” Obi said, adding that the team’s performances throughout the competition reflected the values of hard work, unity and determination required to achieve success.
Spain secured the World Cup title after overcoming defending champions Argentina in the final, completing an impressive tournament in which they defeated some of the world’s strongest football nations. Their triumph also saw them become the first country to simultaneously hold both the FIFA Men’s and Women’s World Cup titles.
The victory was powered by a blend of youthful brilliance and experienced leadership. Teen sensation Lamine Yamal emerged as one of the tournament’s standout performers, while midfield general Rodri was named the recipient of the Golden Ball after being recognised as the competition’s best player.
Obi’s congratulatory message quickly drew reactions from football supporters on social media, with many applauding his recognition of Spain’s achievement and joining him in celebrating one of the most memorable World Cup campaigns in recent history.
Spain’s success has been widely praised across the football world, with analysts highlighting the country’s long-term investment in youth development and its commitment to an attractive, possession-based style of play that has once again delivered global success.
As celebrations continue across Spain, the World Cup victory is expected to stand as one of the defining moments in the nation’s football history, while Obi’s message adds to the growing list of tributes from prominent figures acknowledging La Roja’s remarkable achievement.
