The National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) has commenced the 2026 selection and placement of qualified candidates into Federal and participating State Technical Colleges across Nigeria.

According to a report by The Guardian, the Registrar and Chief Executive of NABTEB, Dr Mohammed Aminu, announced the commencement of the exercise in Abuja, describing it as a critical stage in the admission process that will ensure qualified candidates are fairly and transparently placed into technical colleges.

A total of 15,290 candidates registered for the 2026 National Common Entrance Examination, while 13,848 candidates sat for the test nationwide. Of those who participated, 10,426 candidates, representing 75.29 per cent, scored 50 per cent and above, while 5,708 candidates, representing 41.22 per cent, obtained 70 per cent and above.

Aminu said the placement process would be guided by the principles of merit, equity, accountability, transparency and the Federal Character Principle, urging members of the selection committee to carry out their responsibilities with fairness and integrity.

He disclosed that NABTEB successfully introduced computer based testing, enhanced digital result processing and an Artificial Intelligence powered aptitude placement system to improve the efficiency, credibility and transparency of the examination and placement process.

The registrar described technical colleges as centres for innovation, entrepreneurship and skills development rather than institutions of second choice, stressing that Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) remains essential to producing skilled technicians, artisans and technologists needed for Nigeria’s industrialisation and economic diversification.

He also commended the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, for driving reforms aimed at strengthening technical education through increased investment in skills development, stronger collaboration with industry and the adoption of digital technologies.

Aminu called on governments, parents, school administrators, communities and development partners to intensify awareness campaigns and encourage more young Nigerians to embrace technical and vocational education.

The Federal Government has continued to prioritise Technical and Vocational Education and Training by expanding enrolment into Federal Technical Colleges, reviewing the TVET curriculum and strengthening partnerships with industries to equip young people with practical skills that meet labour market demands.
