The Nigeria Police Force has issued a fresh warning against the indiscriminate discharge of firearms by armed security personnel, stressing that such conduct endangers public safety and will not be tolerated under any circumstance.
The force said the directive forms part of ongoing efforts to promote professionalism, discipline and accountability among officers while safeguarding the lives and property of citizens.
In a statement, the police cautioned officers against the misuse of firearms during official assignments, ceremonial events, escort duties and other public engagements, noting that reckless gunfire has, in some instances, resulted in avoidable injuries, fatalities and damage to property.
The force emphasized that the use of firearms must strictly comply with established operational guidelines and international best practices governing law enforcement. Officers were reminded that weapons should only be discharged when absolutely necessary and in situations permitted by law.
Police authorities warned that any officer found violating the directive would face disciplinary measures, including possible prosecution where the circumstances warrant. They stressed that the misuse of firearms undermines public confidence in the police and contradicts the force’s commitment to protecting lives.
The statement also urged commanders at various levels to intensify supervision of personnel under their command and ensure strict compliance with existing rules on the handling and deployment of firearms. They were directed to reinforce regular training and sensitisation programmes aimed at promoting responsible weapon management and operational discipline.
The police further appealed to members of the public to report incidents involving reckless or unauthorized gunfire by security personnel through official complaint channels, assuring that every report would be investigated thoroughly and appropriate action taken.
Security experts have welcomed the renewed directive, describing it as a timely step toward improving public safety and strengthening accountability within the country’s security architecture. They noted that sustained enforcement of firearm regulations would help reduce accidental shootings and reinforce respect for human rights during law enforcement operations.
The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and ensuring that officers carry out their duties responsibly, with due regard for the safety, dignity and rights of all citizens.
