Kuwait Says Iranian Attack Damages Power and Desalination Plant, Disrupting Electricity Supply

Kuwait said on Friday that an Iranian attack damaged one of the country’s electricity generation and water desalination plants, triggering a fire and disrupting several power generation units as the conflict between the United States and Iran spread further across the Gulf.

The strike came early on Friday during Iran’s latest wave of retaliatory attacks against U.S. military facilities in the Middle East. Iranian forces targeted U.S.linked sites in Kuwait and Bahrain, after a sixth consecutive night of U.S. airstrikes on Iranian military infrastructure.

Kuwait’s Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy said the attack hit one of the country’s power generation and water desalination stations, causing damage to facilities, igniting a fire and disrupting a large number of electricity generation units. Firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control, while emergency and technical teams began assessing the damage, securing the site and working to restore the affected units as soon as possible.

The ministry said no deaths or injuries were immediately reported, but urged citizens and residents to reduce electricity consumption while repair work continues and authorities work to maintain the stability of the national power grid. Emergency contingency plans were activated to minimise disruptions to electricity and water supplies.

The attack marks one of the most significant strikes on civilian infrastructure in Kuwait since the conflict escalated. Kuwait, a close U.S. ally that hosts American military personnel, has repeatedly called for restraint and stressed that it does not want to be drawn into the widening regional conflict.

Analysts warned that attacks on power and desalination facilities pose a serious risk to Gulf countries, many of which depend heavily on desalinated seawater for drinking water and electricity production. Continued attacks on such infrastructure could disrupt essential services, threaten public health and further unsettle regional energy markets.

The latest strike came as the United States expanded its military campaign against Iran by targeting bridges, airports and other transport infrastructure, while international leaders continued to urge both sides to de-escalate and return to diplomatic negotiations to prevent a broader regional war.
