Beijing Rejects Trump’s Election Interference Claims, Seeks to Avoid Escalation

China has dismissed renewed allegations by U.S. President Donald Trump that Beijing interfered in American elections, while signalling it does not intend to escalate tensions despite the latest exchange of accusations between the world’s two largest economies.

According to Reuters, China’s Foreign Ministry rejected Trump’s claims that Beijing attempted to influence the outcome of previous U.S. elections, describing the allegations as baseless and urging Washington to stop making unfounded accusations against China.

Speaking at a regular news briefing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said China has consistently adhered to the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries and has never sought to influence U.S. elections. He also reiterated Beijing’s commitment to developing stable and constructive relations with the United States based on mutual respect and cooperation.

Trump’s comments came after his administration declassified intelligence documents that he claimed contained evidence of foreign interference in past U.S. elections. However, he did not publicly present new verified evidence showing that China altered election outcomes. Previous assessments by U.S. intelligence agencies concluded that while foreign actors have sought to influence public opinion through cyber campaigns and disinformation, there is no evidence that voting systems were manipulated to change certified election results.

Despite rejecting the allegations, Beijing avoided issuing retaliatory measures or escalating its rhetoric, a move analysts say reflects China’s desire to preserve diplomatic and economic stability at a time when both countries continue to engage on trade, technology and regional security issues.

Relations between Washington and Beijing remain strained over issues including trade, advanced technology, Taiwan and the South China Sea. However, officials from both sides have continued diplomatic engagements aimed at preventing further deterioration in bilateral ties.

Analysts say China’s measured response suggests Beijing is seeking to contain political tensions while maintaining dialogue with the United States, even as disputes between the two powers persist.
