Search efforts for three people missing after a boat capsized in San Francisco Bay have been suspended, with authorities saying there is little likelihood of finding additional survivors following an extensive multi agency operation.
The vessel overturned near Treasure Island after encountering rough water. Emergency responders rescued several occupants from the water, while three others remain unaccounted for despite an intensive search involving the U.S. Coast Guard, local fire departments and marine rescue teams.
The Coast Guard said search crews covered hundreds of square miles by air and sea over several days, using helicopters, rescue boats and specialised equipment before deciding to suspend the operation. Officials noted that suspended searches may be resumed if new information becomes available.
Investigators are working to determine what caused the boat to capsize. Weather conditions, water currents, the condition of the vessel and the number of people on board are among the factors being examined as part of the investigation.
Authorities extended their condolences to the families of the missing and urged all boaters to prioritise safety by wearing life jackets, checking weather conditions before departure and ensuring vessels are properly equipped for emergencies.
The incident has renewed concerns about boating safety in San Francisco Bay, where rapidly changing weather, strong tidal currents and cold water can create hazardous conditions even for experienced mariners.
