Former D’Tigress captain Sarah Ogoke has been appointed to lead the newly formed Nigeria Diaspora Basketball Team, marking another significant chapter in her illustrious career and a major step toward strengthening the country’s basketball development through its global talent pool.
The appointment reflects the growing commitment to harnessing the experience and expertise of Nigerian-born players and professionals based abroad, with the initiative aimed at promoting basketball excellence, talent identification and stronger ties between Nigeria and its sporting diaspora.
Ogoke, one of Nigeria’s most decorated female basketball players, brings a wealth of experience to the role, having represented the country at multiple AfroBasket Championships, FIBA Women’s World Cups and the Olympic Games. Her leadership on and off the court has earned widespread respect within the basketball community.
Speaking after her appointment, Ogoke expressed her excitement at the opportunity to contribute to the growth of Nigerian basketball in a new capacity. She said the Diaspora Basketball Team would serve as a platform to unite talented Nigerian players across the world while inspiring the next generation of athletes to represent the country with pride.
The initiative is expected to strengthen collaboration between local basketball administrators and Nigerian professionals overseas, creating opportunities for mentorship, coaching clinics, international exposure and talent development programmes.
Basketball stakeholders have welcomed Ogoke’s appointment, describing it as a strategic move that combines leadership, experience and a deep understanding of Nigerian basketball. Many believe her influence will help bridge the gap between home-based and diaspora players while expanding Nigeria’s presence on the international basketball scene.
The Nigeria Diaspora Basketball Team is also expected to participate in exhibition matches, developmental programmes and international engagements designed to showcase Nigerian talent and encourage greater investment in the sport.
As preparations begin for the team’s inaugural activities, optimism is high that Ogoke’s leadership will inspire a new era of collaboration and excellence. Her appointment not only recognises her outstanding contribution as a player but also positions her to shape the future of Nigerian basketball beyond her playing career.
