The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has come under increasing scrutiny following the introduction of a ride booking application at the nation’s airports, a move that has sparked opposition from airport taxi operators who fear it could disrupt their operations and affect their livelihoods.
The digital platform was introduced as part of FAAN’s broader efforts to modernise airport ground transportation, improve passenger convenience and promote transparency in taxi services. The application is expected to enable travellers to book licensed airport rides electronically, monitor fares and access safer, more efficient transportation upon arrival.
However, the initiative has generated concerns among traditional airport taxi operators, who argue that the new system could reduce their patronage and alter the existing operational framework that has governed airport transport services for years. Some operators have called for wider consultations, insisting that all stakeholders should be involved before the full implementation of the platform.
Industry observers noted that the dispute reflects the growing impact of digital transformation on Nigeria’s transportation sector, where technology-driven services are increasingly reshaping business models and customer expectations. They believe innovation remains essential for improving service delivery but emphasise the need to balance technological advancement with the interests of existing service providers.
Passengers and business travellers have largely welcomed the initiative, saying digital ride booking offers greater convenience, fare transparency and improved security. Many believe the platform could reduce waiting times, minimise pricing disputes and enhance the overall travel experience at Nigerian airports.
Aviation experts have urged FAAN and airport transport unions to engage in constructive dialogue to address concerns surrounding the new system. They stressed that collaboration between regulators and operators would be critical to ensuring a smooth transition while maintaining service quality and protecting legitimate business interests.
Analysts believe the successful deployment of the ride booking platform could mark a significant step in the digital transformation of Nigeria’s aviation industry. They noted that with effective stakeholder engagement and clear operational guidelines, the initiative has the potential to improve airport transportation services, strengthen passenger confidence and align Nigeria’s airports with global best practices in ground mobility management.
