The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has commenced consultations with key stakeholders on a proposed initiative to provide free internet access to educational institutions across the country as part of efforts to strengthen digital learning and expand access to quality education.
The consultations bring together representatives from the telecommunications industry, education sector, technology firms, government agencies and development partners to explore practical strategies for improving internet connectivity in schools, colleges and universities.
According to the commission, the initiative is designed to bridge the digital divide by ensuring that students and educators have reliable access to online learning resources, digital libraries, virtual classrooms and research platforms. The programme is also expected to enhance digital literacy and support the integration of technology into Nigeria’s education system.
Stakeholders noted that improved internet connectivity would create greater opportunities for innovation, collaboration and academic excellence while equipping students with the digital skills required in an increasingly technology-driven global economy. They also stressed the importance of ensuring that underserved and rural communities benefit from the programme.
Industry experts believe the availability of free internet services in educational institutions could significantly reduce learning inequalities, improve research capabilities and support the government’s broader digital economy agenda. They added that affordable and reliable broadband access has become essential for modern education and workforce development.
The discussions also focused on infrastructure requirements, funding mechanisms, cybersecurity, network sustainability and public-private partnerships needed to ensure the long-term success of the initiative. Participants emphasised that collaboration among government, telecom operators and educational institutions would be crucial to delivering effective and inclusive connectivity solutions.
The NCC reaffirmed its commitment to expanding broadband penetration and promoting digital inclusion through policies that encourage innovation and investment in telecommunications infrastructure. Analysts say the proposed initiative has the potential to transform Nigeria’s education sector by improving access to knowledge, fostering digital innovation and preparing students for opportunities in the global digital economy.
