Britain is likely to experience more frequent and intense weather extremes in the years ahead as climate change continues to reshape the country’s weather patterns, according to the UK’s national weather service.
The Met Office said rising global temperatures are increasing the likelihood of prolonged heatwaves, heavier rainfall, flash flooding and periods of drought, with recent years providing clear evidence of how rapidly the country’s climate is changing.
Scientists noted that the UK has recorded several of its warmest years on record over the past decade, while extreme rainfall events have become more common, placing growing pressure on infrastructure, agriculture and public services.
Experts warned that hotter summers could heighten the risk of wildfires, water shortages and heat related illnesses, while wetter winters may increase the frequency of flooding and storm damage. They said communities, businesses and local authorities will need to strengthen resilience and adapt to changing weather conditions.
The Met Office urged policymakers to continue investing in climate adaptation measures, including improved flood defences, sustainable water management and early warning systems to reduce the impact of future extreme weather events.
Climate specialists say limiting global greenhouse gas emissions remains essential to slowing long term warming, but stress that adaptation will play an increasingly important role as countries respond to the growing effects of climate change.
The warning comes as several parts of Europe continue to experience unusually high temperatures and prolonged dry conditions, reinforcing concerns about the increasing impact of climate change across the continent.
