The White House has publicly backed England to lift the 2026 FIFA World Cup trophy following the elimination of co-hosts the United States from the tournament, adding an unexpected political twist to football’s biggest competition.
Andrew Giuliani, Executive Director of the White House FIFA World Cup Task Force, revealed that England has the administration’s support for the remainder of the tournament. According to Giuliani, the endorsement is rooted in the strong historical and cultural ties between the United States and England, with the Three Lions now carrying the hopes of many American football fans after the host nation’s exit.
The United States saw its World Cup campaign come to an end after a heavy defeat to Belgium in the Round of 16, leaving England as the preferred choice within the White House as the tournament heads into the decisive stages. The announcement has sparked widespread discussion among football supporters, with many viewing it as a symbolic gesture rather than an official government position.
England have impressed throughout the competition under head coach Thomas Tuchel, reaching the semi-finals after victories over DR Congo, Mexico and Norway. They are now preparing for a blockbuster clash against defending champions Argentina, with a place in the World Cup final at stake.
The White House’s endorsement comes as England continue their quest to win a first World Cup title since their historic triumph in 1966. The Three Lions have displayed resilience, tactical discipline and attacking quality throughout the tournament, strengthening belief that they could finally end their decades-long wait for football’s biggest prize.
Whether the White House’s backing proves to be a lucky omen remains to be seen, but England’s focus will remain firmly on the task ahead as they seek to overcome Argentina and move one step closer to World Cup glory.
