As Reported by Vanguard News The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, has urged corps members serving in Kogi State to embrace entrepreneurship and take advantage of available opportunities to build sustainable sources of income.

Speaking during a working visit to the NYSC Kogi State Secretariat, the Director General encouraged corps members to remain hardworking, innovative and committed to creating value rather than relying solely on their monthly allowances.

He stressed that there is dignity in labour and advised them to identify market needs, develop practical solutions and establish multiple streams of income. Using the widely discussed “Akara” business as an example, Nafiu said even small ventures have the potential to transform lives when managed with dedication and consistency.

He also noted that Nigeria’s large population offers enormous opportunities for entrepreneurship and wealth creation, urging corps members not to despise humble beginnings but to remain focused while managing their monthly allowances prudently.

The NYSC Director General assured corps members that he would engage the Kogi State Government on the issue of state allowances. He also directed the State Coordinator to stop posting corps members to private organisations that neither provide accommodation nor pay stipends.

According to him, corps members should be mentored and equipped with relevant skills at their places of primary assignment instead of being exposed to exploitation.

Nafiu further announced plans to improve corps members’ welfare through increased transportation support during orientation camps, enhanced feeding arrangements and better quality NYSC kits beginning next year.

He also commended members of staff in the state for their dedication and professionalism, assuring them that the management of the scheme would continue to prioritise their welfare.

Earlier, the Kogi State Coordinator of the NYSC, Mrs Chris Moneke Chika, described the Director General’s visit as a reflection of purposeful leadership and his commitment to the welfare of corps members and staff.

She disclosed that Kogi State currently has 3,953 corps members serving across its 21 local government areas, supported by 106 staff members working towards achieving the objectives of the NYSC scheme.

Chika also acknowledged the continued support of the NYSC National Directorate Headquarters and the Kogi State Government, saying the conducive environment in the state has contributed significantly to the successful implementation of the scheme’s programmes.

She added that preparations were at an advanced stage for the forthcoming Corps Employers’ Workshop and the Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers programme.
