BBC News Veteran television presenter Dermot Murnaghan has died at the age of 68, one year after announcing that he had been diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer.
His family confirmed that the former BBC, ITV and Sky News journalist died peacefully at his home in North London, surrounded by his family.
Murnaghan was a familiar face on British television for more than five decades, presenting major news programmes including the BBC News at Six, BBC News at Ten and ITV Evening News. He also hosted BBC Breakfast and the popular quiz programme Eggheads.
Following his diagnosis, Murnaghan became an advocate for prostate cancer awareness, urging men particularly those over 50 and those at higher risk to seek medical advice and get tested.
He stressed that early detection is vital, noting that prostate cancer can sometimes progress rapidly without obvious symptoms.
His family thanked the public for the many messages of support he received during his illness and for the encouragement shown towards his campaign to raise awareness about prostate cancer screening.
