Asian Investors Turn to Hedge Funds as Bond Market Volatility Raises Concerns

Asian investors are increasing their investments in hedge funds as pension funds, family offices and institutional investors seek alternatives to traditional stocks and bonds amid growing market uncertainty.

Global hedge fund assets rose by $409 billion in the second quarter of 2026, reaching a record $5.6 trillion, according to data from Hedge Fund Research. The increase highlights growing interest in investment strategies that can help investors manage market volatility and diversify their portfolios.

The shift comes as government bonds, traditionally considered a reliable source of stability, have struggled to protect portfolios during periods of market turbulence. Investors are also reassessing the conventional strategy of allocating 60 per cent of their portfolios to stocks and 40 per cent to bonds.

Hedge funds use different approaches, including macroeconomic analysis, quantitative models and multi-strategy investing, to generate returns under varying market conditions. These methods can help investors respond to price movements across financial markets.

A global hedge fund index gained 12.4 per cent in 2025, marking its strongest annual performance since 2009. The index rose a further 7 per cent in 2026 as of October 13.

Interest is growing among Asian institutional investors, including Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund and Japanese pension funds. Some investors are considering allocating around 5 to 10 per cent of their portfolios to hedge funds.

However, performance varies considerably across the industry, and hedge funds can carry significant risks. Investors are increasingly treating them as a complement to traditional investments rather than a complete replacement for stocks and bonds.
