Sony has announced that all new PlayStation games released from January 2028 onward will no longer be available on physical discs. Instead, games sold in retail stores will include a digital download code, marking a major shift toward an all digital future for the gaming industry.

The announcement comes just days after Rockstar Games confirmed that the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI will also launch without a physical disc, signaling a broader industry trend away from traditional physical media.

Sony Says Consumer Preferences Are Changing

In a blog post, Sony said the decision reflects the growing preference among players for digital content.

“As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, this is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs.”

Sony stressed that games released before January 2028 will continue to be available on disc, and the change will only apply to new titles launched after that date.

Critics Raise Consumer Rights Concerns

The move has sparked criticism from gamers, retailers and industry experts who argue that removing physical discs reduces consumer ownership and limits players’ options.

Gaming journalist Vikki Blake described the announcement as a “body blow to consumer rights.”

She said the decision threatens game preservation and makes gaming more expensive for players who depend on buying used games, trading titles or borrowing games from friends.

Blake also pointed out the irony that Sony once promoted the ease of sharing physical games during the PlayStation 4 era in a marketing campaign aimed at rival Xbox.

“It’s not funny anymore, is it?” she said.

Retailers Face Uncertain Future

Christopher Dring, editor of The Game Business, said the announcement was surprising despite digital downloads already dominating PlayStation game sales.

He noted that millions of physical PlayStation games are still sold every year, making the decision a significant blow to retailers that continue to rely on physical game sales.

Independent game retailer Lootbox Gaming in Delaware also criticized the move. The company, which recently declined to stock the disc less physical edition of Grand Theft Auto VI, called Sony’s decision an attack on gamers, collectors and the wider gaming industry.

According to the retailer, the shift affects developers, publishers, distributors and retailers while weakening consumers’ ability to truly own the games they purchase.

Digital Ownership Debate Intensifies

The announcement comes amid growing concerns over digital ownership.

Sony has recently faced backlash after confirming that more than 500 films and television shows purchased through the PlayStation Store will disappear from users’ libraries on 1 September following the expiration of its licensing agreement with StudioCanal.

The incident has fueled concerns that digital purchases may not provide permanent ownership if licensing agreements expire.

Many gamers have also expressed disappointment that titles like Grand Theft Auto VI will not include physical discs, arguing that digital only releases prevent them from lending games to friends or reselling them after completion.

The BBC has asked Sony whether it plans to introduce a system allowing users to transfer ownership of digital games in the future. The company has not yet responded.

A Turning Point for Gaming

Sony’s decision marks one of the biggest changes in the history of console gaming. While digital downloads have steadily become the preferred method of purchasing games, the end of physical discs raises new questions about ownership, preservation and consumer rights as the industry continues its transition toward an entirely digital marketplace.
