Girls in Bauchi State have been encouraged to pursue education, acquire vocational skills and consider careers traditionally dominated by men to promote financial independence and reduce gender inequality.

The appeal was made during an event held in Bauchi on Sunday to mark the International Day of the Girl Child. The programme was organised under the Renewed Women’s Voice and Leadership Project in collaboration with ActionAid Nigeria, Azurfa Women and Youth Development Initiative, and Fahimta Women and Youth Development Initiative.

Mustapha Idris, Monitoring and Evaluation Officer of Fahimta Women and Youth Development Initiative, urged students to use their school holidays to learn practical skills such as shoemaking and soap production.

He explained that vocational training could help girls develop income-generating abilities, become economically independent and reduce their reliance on others.

Monica Tanko, Executive Director of Azurfa Women and Youth Development Initiative, also advised girls to remain focused on their education and avoid dropping out before completing their studies. She emphasised the importance of combining formal education with practical skills.

Meanwhile, Timothy Ibrahim, an engineer with more than 20 years of professional experience, encouraged the students to consider engineering and other professions often associated with men. He urged them not to allow gender stereotypes to limit their ambitions.

The initiative highlights how education and vocational training can expand girls’ career opportunities, strengthen their financial independence and support their participation in economic development.
