Nigeria’s Flamingos head coach Akeem Busari has urged his players to remain calm and improve their finishing as they prepare for a decisive group-stage encounter against Korea DPR at the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
The Nigerian side revived its campaign with a 2-0 victory over tournament debutants Puerto Rico at the Mohammed VI Football Complex, bouncing back from an opening-day defeat to Poland.
Despite the important win, Busari admitted that his players struggled to convert their chances, making the contest more difficult than expected.
“It was a very tough game, really, for both sides,” the coach said after the match, noting that the Flamingos missed several opportunities in the first half before securing their second goal late in the game.
He added that the competition was becoming increasingly challenging, with opponents proving difficult to overcome.
Busari also highlighted the importance of rebuilding the players’ confidence after their defeat to Poland, explaining that the coaching staff had focused on encouraging and guiding the young footballers rather than increasing the pressure on them.
According to the coach, helping the players manage their emotions and regain belief in their abilities was crucial to their response against Puerto Rico.

He was encouraged by the improvement in their composure, saying the team displayed greater calmness than in its opening fixture.
“Today they experienced an exceptional; they are calmer today than in the Poland game,” Busari said.
The Flamingos will now turn their attention to Korea DPR, knowing that another strong performance will be vital to their hopes of progressing in the tournament.
With qualification at stake, Nigeria will need to combine the confidence gained from their victory with greater efficiency in front of goal.
