President Bola Tinubu has directed security agencies to rescue all kidnapped Nigerians and eliminate terrorist and bandit camps across the country ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd.), disclosed this on Thursday after a security meeting presided over by the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Musa said Tinubu had instructed security chiefs to intensify operations against terrorists and bandits and ensure that all abducted persons were rescued, regardless of where they were being held.

According to the minister, the President also directed security agencies to provide a safe environment for Nigerians to participate freely in the forthcoming elections.

Musa said the President wanted the 2027 polls to be free, fair and credible, stressing that security personnel must remain professional and politically neutral throughout the electoral process.

He assured opposition parties and other political stakeholders that security agencies would not intimidate candidates or prevent any party from participating in the elections.

The minister added that the government was strengthening the capacity of security agencies through recruitment, training and the procurement of additional equipment.

He disclosed that the President was expected to commission approximately 10 newly acquired aircraft and helicopters to improve the operational capacity of the armed forces.

Musa also urged Nigerians to support security agencies by providing useful information about suspicious activities and reporting misconduct by security personnel.

He emphasised that security was a collective responsibility and called on citizens to cooperate with authorities in addressing threats to lives and property.

The meeting was attended by senior military officers, intelligence chiefs and other security officials, including the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu.

The directive comes as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, with insecurity and the protection of voters remaining important concerns for the government and electoral stakeholders.

The effectiveness of the measures will depend on their implementation and the ability of security agencies to protect communities, rescue abducted persons and guarantee peaceful participation in the electoral process.
