The Tinubu Health Sector Practitioners Alliance (TIHSEPA) has called on Nigerian health professionals to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, citing reforms in medical education, healthcare infrastructure, workforce development and health insurance.
The alliance’s National Coordinator, Dr Ogechi Lokpobiri, said the administration’s healthcare initiatives could strengthen service delivery and improve access to medical services if implementation is sustained.
Lokpobiri highlighted an increase in annual enrolment quotas for nursing and midwifery institutions, from 28,000 in May 2023 to 115,000 for the 2025 academic year. She also cited the retraining of more than 69,000 frontline health workers and approval for the recruitment of 20,000 additional health personnel, with nurses and midwives expected to fill 60 per cent of the positions.
She further pointed to investments in medical education, new healthcare facilities, emergency ambulance services and expanded health insurance coverage. According to figures she cited, more than 22 million Nigerians had enrolled in health insurance by July 2026.
However, Lokpobiri stressed that increasing enrolment and recruitment must be matched with better working conditions, adequate equipment, proper staffing and improved welfare to retain skilled professionals.
She urged doctors, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory scientists and other health workers to support Tinubu in the 2027 election, arguing that a second term would provide an opportunity to continue the reforms.
The impact of these initiatives will depend on sustained funding, effective implementation and measurable improvements in healthcare access and patient outcomes.
