Japanese authorities have raided the offices of the country’s four biggest beer makers as part of an investigation into suspected coordination of beverage prices.

The Japan Fair Trade Commission searched facilities linked to Asahi Breweries, Kirin Brewery, Suntory and Sapporo Breweries on October 7 over allegations that the companies may have breached the country’s Antimonopoly Act.

The four brewers control more than 90% of Japan’s domestic beer market, giving the investigation potential implications for wholesalers, retailers and consumers.

Investigators are examining whether executives from the companies coordinated the timing and scale of price increases over several years. The suspected coordination includes beer and other beer-like beverages, with particular attention on price increases implemented in October 2022 and April 2025.

The companies have cited higher raw-material, energy and distribution costs when announcing price increases. However, the investigation is seeking to establish whether the increases were independently determined or resulted from an agreement between competitors.

All four companies have confirmed the investigation and said they will cooperate with the authorities. The probe could eventually lead to further enforcement action if violations of Japan’s competition laws are established.

The investigation comes as Japan’s beer industry faces declining domestic consumption linked to demographic changes and shifting drinking habits, even though the market remains commercially significant.
