A majority of U.S. voters believe the federal government is not doing enough to address the potential risks posed by artificial intelligence, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll.
The survey found that 57% of registered voters said the Trump administration is not taking AI risks seriously enough or at all. A similar concern was expressed about Congress, with 54% saying lawmakers are not taking the risks seriously enough.
Public concern also extends to the impact of AI on employment and society. The poll found that 84% of voters view AI as a threat to American workers, while 62% believe the technology could eventually become uncontrollable and pose a risk to humanity.
The findings also point to broad support for government oversight. Eighty percent of Democratic voters and 61% of Republican voters said AI should face greater regulation. Meanwhile, 56% supported limits on the construction of AI data centers, which have faced growing scrutiny over their electricity and infrastructure demands.
The poll comes as U.S. policymakers and technology companies continue to debate how to balance AI development with concerns over safety, jobs, infrastructure and regulation. The Reuters/Ipsos survey included 4,506 U.S. adults, including 3,526 registered voters, and was conducted online.
