Benin’s President Romuald Wadagni has held talks with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris during his first official visit to France since assuming office in May.
Macron received Wadagni at the Élysée Palace on Monday, October 5, where the two leaders discussed ways to strengthen cooperation between Benin and France.
The talks focused on key areas of bilateral relations, including energy, vocational training, security and culture. Several agreements and financial commitments were also announced as part of efforts to deepen cooperation between the two countries.
The visit comes as France seeks to reshape its partnerships across Africa, with greater emphasis on economic cooperation, security support, training and investment.
France maintains security cooperation with Benin, including military training, as the West African country continues to confront armed groups operating in its northern areas.
The meeting also highlighted cultural ties between the two countries, including ongoing discussions surrounding the restitution of Beninese cultural heritage taken during the colonial period.
Macron described the relationship between France and Benin as one based on friendship, trust and ambition, while the visit provided an opportunity for both governments to discuss shared priorities and future cooperation.
