Former Chelsea captain César Azpilicueta has credited his long association with the London club with helping him develop into a better footballer and a stronger leader.
Azpilicueta, who spent more than a decade at Chelsea after joining the club from Marseille in 2012, became one of the most respected figures in the club’s modern history. During his time at Stamford Bridge, he won major honours including the Premier League, FA Cup, UEFA Champions League, Europa League and FIFA Club World Cup.
Reflecting on his career at Chelsea, the Spanish defender said his experiences at the club contributed significantly to his growth both on and off the pitch.
Azpilicueta was appointed Chelsea captain in 2019 and went on to lead the team through several important campaigns. His consistency, professionalism and leadership earned him widespread recognition among teammates and supporters.
The defender eventually left Chelsea in 2023 to join Atlético Madrid, bringing an end to an 11-year spell in west London.
Azpilicueta’s comments underline the lasting influence of his Chelsea years, during which he developed from a relatively young defender into an experienced leader who represented the club in some of the biggest matches in European football.
