Governors in the North East have renewed their commitment to regional cooperation, security, economic integration and development across the six states of the region.

The commitment was contained in a communiqué issued after a meeting of the North East Governors’ Forum, chaired by Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum. Governors of Borno, Adamawa and Gombe attended the meeting, while Bauchi and Yobe were represented by their deputy governors.

The forum commended ongoing federal interventions in major transport and energy projects, including the Port Harcourt-Jos-Bauchi-Gombe-Maiduguri rail corridor and the Akwanga-Jos-Bauchi-Gombe-Biu-Maiduguri highway.

The governors also called for the resumption of stalled oil exploration in Magumeri and Gubio Local Government Areas of Borno State.

On electricity, the forum highlighted the contribution of the Dadinkowa Hydropower Plant to the national grid and urged member states to expand solar and mini-grid projects under the new electricity law. It also renewed its call for accelerated action on the Mambila Hydropower Project.

The governors called for increased investment in education and youth development, while urging stronger efforts to address the region’s out-of-school population.

The forum also backed expanded CNG and LNG infrastructure, electric public transport and plans for a North East regional air shuttle to improve movement of people and goods.

On security, the governors commended the Armed Forces and other security agencies for progress against insurgency and pledged continued efforts to address socio-economic conditions affecting young people.

The next forum meeting is scheduled for December 18 and 19, 2026, in Gombe State.
