The Abia State Government has raised concerns over the increasing vandalism of power assets and other government projects across the state.
The state Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, disclosed this after the State Executive Council meeting, saying the destruction of power infrastructure was disrupting electricity supply and increasing the government’s financial burden.
Kanu urged traditional rulers, town union leaders, security agencies and residents to work together to protect government projects, particularly electricity infrastructure located within their communities.
He said communities should take ownership of public facilities and develop stronger strategies to prevent vandals from destroying critical infrastructure.
The government’s concerns come amid efforts to strengthen the protection of electricity infrastructure in parts of Abia. Recent interventions have included increased security around transmission facilities and calls for residents to report suspicious activities.
The commissioner also said the government was continuing efforts to address flooding through the clearing of drainage channels and other interventions.
He added that the rehabilitation of five water schemes under the Abia Integrated Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Programme was ongoing across three sanitary zones.
