The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 22 year old security guard over the alleged sexual assault of a five year old pupil of a nursery and primary school in Calabar.
The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said the incident was reported to the command by the school proprietress on September 28, 2026.
According to the police, the suspect, identified as Bright Bassey Elijah, was allegedly caught taking the child to an uncompleted building near the school, where the alleged assault reportedly occurred.
The suspect is currently in police custody, while preliminary investigation is ongoing. The police said the case would subsequently be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
The command said it was treating the allegation with seriousness because of the age of the alleged victim and assured that appropriate investigative and child protection procedures would be followed in accordance with the law.
The police urged parents, guardians, school authorities and members of the public to promptly report suspected cases of child abuse or exploitation.
The command also cautioned members of the public against sharing the child’s identity, photographs or other identifying information in order to protect her privacy and welfare.
