Apple has introduced Apple Pay in India, expanding its digital-wallet service into a market where mobile and digital payments are already widely used.
The service is initially available to eligible Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit cardholders, who can add their cards to Apple Wallet and use compatible iPhones and Apple Watches for contactless payments at supported merchants.
Apple Pay enters a market dominated by UPI, India’s widely used instant-payment system. The service instead focuses on card-based transactions, giving Apple users another way to pay with their devices.
The initial partnership with Axis Bank provides a starting point for Apple’s rollout, with broader support for banks and card issuers expected as Apple Pay develops in the Indian market.
