The Central Bank of Nigeria has urged Nigerians to handle the naira with care and pride, stressing the importance of preserving the quality and integrity of the country’s currency.
The apex bank made the appeal as part of efforts to promote responsible currency management and discourage practices that damage or deface naira notes.
The CBN urged members of the public to avoid spraying, writing on, tearing, stapling, or deliberately damaging naira notes.
It also encouraged Nigerians to keep banknotes clean and presentable and to use appropriate banking channels when making cash transactions.
The bank noted that careless handling of the currency increases the cost of replacing damaged notes and places additional pressure on the country’s currency management system.
The CBN further called on businesses, traders and members of the public to treat the naira as a symbol of national identity and handle it responsibly.
It stressed that preserving the quality of banknotes is a shared responsibility involving the government, financial institutions, businesses and citizens.
The appeal comes amid renewed efforts by the apex bank to improve cash management and promote greater respect for the naira in public and commercial transactions.
